Three people - a California-based botanist and nature writer, a Native American writer/artist/basketweaver, and a visual artist whose work often incorporates plant materials, provide complimentary insights of the unique California environment. Commissioned by the Headlands Center for the Arts to document the native flora of the Marin Headlands according to Linnean and Native American classification systems. Simply and beautifully designed, this work makes a wonderful gift as well as an illuminating exploration of distinct personal visions of single locale.
Glenn Keator is a freelance teacher, botanist, and writer. He has taught courses and led field trips on native plants for the California Academy of Sciences, the Yosemite Association, Golden Gate Park's Strybing Arboretum, and many other arboretums and nature centers around the country. He is the author of several books on plants, including The Life of an Oak. He lives in Berkeley, California.
Linda Yamane traces her ancestry to the Rumsien, the native people of the Monterey area. She is an artist, writer, researcher, and cultural demonstrator living in Seaside, California. She is also a contributing editor to News From Native California and was on the founding board of the California Indian Basketweavers Association.
