taxon
a taxonomic grouping, i.e. a grouping, at whatever level (family, genus, species, etc.), representing specific relationships; (plural: taxa)
ternate
In a group of three, as in a leaf with three leaflets.
tetrapinnate
pinnately compound leaves in which the leaflets are themselves tripinnate.
tetraploid
Twice the usual number of whole chromosome sets (i.e. 4 sets instead of the normal 2), usually resulting in a larger, more vigorous plant.
tip pinch
Using thumb and forefinger, grasp the tender growing point of a shoot and pinch it out (including the stem - not just the leaf tips) using fingernails. This is done to encourage side shoots, promoting bushiness.
tomentose
Short closely matted hairs, wool, or scales, white or colored, covering the a leaf surface, stem or even flower.
tripinnate
pinnately compound leaves in which the leaflets are themselves bipinnate; also called thrice-pinnate.
triploid
One and one half the usual number of whole chromosome sets (i.e. 3 sets instead of 2), resulting in a sterile plant.
type
(herbarium specimens) - a herbarium sheet(s) or illustration to which the name of a taxon (species, genus, subspecies, variety, etc.) is permanently assigned.
